The Turkey Valley golf teams finally kicked off their 2022 golf season on Monday, April 11 at Guttenberg Golf and Country Club.
“We used this first game of the season as a good barometer to see where we are at the start of the 2002 campaign,” coach John Reicks said. “I think we played well for the most part considering it was the first time on a course all season. We played shorthanded as some athletes were busy with their other activities. Our putting wasn’t where we needed it, and our approach shots didn’t give us many good looks on the pin.
The boys lost a one-shot heartbreaker 197-198, although the Kurtenbach brothers both came home with equipment.
Senior Garrett Kurtenbach is tied for medalist honors with a bogey round of 45, tying Clayton Ridge Jace Fassbinder for first place. Sophomore Caleb Kurtenbach shot a 49 to win the silver medal.
The Trojans received a boost from the Trojan Athletics team as dual-sport athletes Calvin Bodensteiner and Oliver Schmitt both came in with 52 to complete the scoring. Juniors Carson Busta (58), Garrett Dietzenbach (59) and Noah Hanson (63) rounded out the Trojan scorecard.
The Lady Trojans had just four competitors on the course, including three freshmen, and the veteran team from Clayton Ridge took full advantage with a 226-309 decision.
Sole senior returnee Tess Franzen missed the encounter while attending the state’s FFA convention, but the young Lady Trojans had some bright spots along the way.
Sophomore Mariah Throndson led the way with a 67, and three promising freshmen Morgan Vsetecka (68), Kaitlyn Schroeder (84) and Sofia Rivera (90) all showed courage and determination for their first competition on a golf course. Vsetecka came within inches of registering a par on the No. 1 hole.
“For the first round of her high school career, she was very consistent that day. I’m looking for the Lady Trojans to surprise some people before the end of the season at the end of May,” coach Reicks concluded.
The Trojans will take to the course on Thursday, April 14 at Silver Springs Golf Course in Ossian against South Winn at 4 p.m.
