The Ogun State Police Command said on Saturday it arrested a 27-year-old man, Sikiru Ibrahim, who killed his father with an ax for waking him from his sleep.

It was learned that the trouble started when the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, returned from work on Wednesday morning and met his sleeping son.

The late Ibrahim allegedly woke up his son and questioned him about why he was still in bed at the time of day.

Angered by his father’s action, Sikiru, suspected of being a cultist, allegedly attacked him with a cutlass.

Ibrahim reportedly died on Thursday from injuries he sustained in the attack while receiving treatment at a general hospital.

State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged at Onipanu Division Headquarters by an Abiodun on Sunday, identified as a neighbor of the deceased.

“The neighbor reported that the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, returned home and met his son who was still sleeping, and when he asked him why he was still sleeping at this time of day, the suspect turned angry and took out a cutlass with which he attacked the victim.

“As soon as the report was made, the DPO Division Onipanu, CSP Bamidele Job quickly mobilized his men and moved to the scene where the suspect was arrested and the victim rushed to a general hospital for treatment. The suspect , who is strongly suspected of being a cultist, has no reasonable explanation for his action when questioned,” Oyeyemi added.

The PPRO, however, said Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole ordered the suspect’s immediate transfer to the homicide section of the State Department of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence for further investigation and prosecution.
