Many community newspapers in Massachusetts will cease their print edition this spring

Many Massachusetts community newspapers will stop printing paper editions this spring. Several WickedLocal newspapers operated by Gannett are affected and published the announcement this week. The list includes Beacon Villager, Brookline Tab, Carver Reporter, Kingston Reporter, Needham Times, Newton Tab, Sudbury Town Crier, Waltham News Tribune, Wayland Town Crier and Weston Town Crier. The change was described as a “business decision”. The company’s focus on presenting digital news helps ensure the continued delivery of valuable community journalism and effective platforms for advertisers,” they wrote. According to the announcements, print editions finals will be printed on various dates in early May Gannett operates USA Today and, according to a February SEC filing, 35 printing companies that each produced an average of 21 publications last year The company had 10 dailies, 65 weeklies and a production in Massachusetts at the start of the year. None of the Massachusetts publications were among the company’s “major publications” in 2021. The Providence Journal was at the bottom of that list, with a daily distribution of 41,289.
