One of Marathon’s most iconic works of art received a facelift on March 2 when world-renowned artist and conservationist Wyland returned to Kmart Square to touch up the “Whaling Wall #87 – Florida’s Radiant Reef”, originally painted with Guy Harvey in 2001.

With equipment donated by Sunbelt Rentals, paint donated by Sherwin Wiliams, and booths from the Dolphin Research Center, Turtle Hospital, and Save the Turtles to address visitor conservation education, Wyland worked most of the daytime. On the program: reinvigorate the major aspects of the mural, add a few new elements – including an octopus – to the aquatic scene and protect the mural with a new transparent coating.

Stopping often to chat and take photos with dignitaries, old friends and onlookers, the painter thanked the community for their support before finally heading to Key West for another mural restoration.

“This mural is actually in very good condition,” he said. “There were so many people here waiting for me, and I’m really honored to do that. The amount of support is huge.
