The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, mourned the renowned mathematician and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams.
The governor, in a statement, described Alele-Williams as an amazon, who walked where others feared, hailing her unparalleled dedication to national development.
Obaseki noted that Alele-Williams gave UNIBEN sanity.
He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I received the sad news of the passing of a renowned academic and administrator, Professor Grace Alele-Williams.”
The Governor said Professor Alele-Williams was a thoroughbred academic who throughout her life left an indelible mark of dedicated service, hard work, diligence and determination.
He said: “As the first Nigerian woman to earn a PhD in Mathematics, Professor Alele-Williams was a woman of many firsts. She shattered the glass ceiling and didn’t look back afterward.
“When she became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin – at the time the first-ever female Vice-Chancellor of a Nigerian university – she shone brightly as a fearless administrator and returned sanity. to the higher institution during a time of social upheaval.
“Prof. Alele-Williams will be remembered for her insight, devotion to duty and courage as well as her commitment to breaking down barriers limiting the advancement of women into uncharted territories.
The Governor sympathizes with the Alele-Williams family, praying that God will grant all the courage to bear the irreparable loss.
