Every Wednesday, we shine the spotlight on five student activities that support a wide range of learners. In this week’s roundup of accessible activities, we invite students to reflect on athletes coming out of retirement, learn how to make poetry with the journal, reflect on a photograph from the recent confirmation hearings of the Supreme Court, learning a new word coined by a student and commenting on a photograph.

1. Share your thoughts on throwback stories.

This Student review The question focuses on athletes who retire from a sport and then “do not retire”. Students can share their thoughts on comeback stories and if they have ever had the experience of quitting something and coming back to it later.

2. Create poems using the journal.

This small guide features tips from poets Leah Umansky and E. Kristin Anderson and gives students four ways to use their journal to write a poem. For this National Poetry Month, students can experiment with found poetry, an erase poem, a cento poem, and a golden shovel poem.

3. Reflect on a photograph.

This Image prompt features a now iconic image of Ketanji Brown Jackson and his daughter, during Justice Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Students will share what they know about the image, read a related article to learn more about the background, and share their thoughts on the post.

4. Use a new word invented by a teenager.

On this April Fool’s Day, The Learning Network released a new word invented by a student, Rohana Khattak, 16, from Islamabad, Pakistan. Students can try using the made-up word in a sentence and find out why Rohana thinks it is important. Then they can make up their own new word by following our February Vocabulary Challenge guidelines.

5. Comment on an image.

In this week What’s going on in this picturestudents can participate in a lively conversation with other students from around the world about what they think is happening in an unlabeled photograph from the New York Times.
